Parisian Cafe Stripe

The French-girl uniform survives because it is four pieces that never need rethinking: a Breton stripe, a camel trench, straight indigo jeans, flat black shoes. Its charm is that it looks unplanned, which is also the trap — get one proportion wrong and it reads as a costume of itself.

The stripe is the whole garment

Narrow navy bands on off-white, evenly spaced, with a boat neck and a long or three-quarter sleeve. That is the classic, and it flatters broadly because the boat neck opens the collarbone and carries the eye sideways across the shoulders. Useful for balancing a wider hip; less useful if your shoulders are already the broadest thing about you, in which case a V-neck striped tee does the same job with a softer top line.

Stripe width matters far more than stripe direction. Thick bands enlarge whatever they sit on and push the look toward nautical fancy dress; thin, closely set stripes recede. A full bust does better in a slightly heavier knit that skims, since a fine jersey stripe bends around the curve and advertises it.

Making the bottom half behave

Straight or slim-straight jeans in dark, even indigo — no fading, no distressing, because the whole look depends on being tidy. Hem at the ankle bone when you are in flats, so the ballet shoe stays visible instead of getting swallowed. Flats do shorten the leg line; a pointed toe and a hem that stops above the shoe recovers most of it. Petite frames should keep the trench at or just above the knee, since a mid-calf coat over a full-length jean stacks three horizontal lines below the waist.

What it does not do

It is not warm. A trench is a rain layer, not a winter coat, and piling on a bulky scarf and beanie tips the whole thing into a heavier, different outfit. It also asks for good grooming: the pieces are so plain that unbrushed hair reads as unwashed rather than undone.
