A denim shirt dress is the garment that gets worn most and thought about least — an entire outfit that asks no decisions of you, in a fabric that survives a full day of being sat on.

The belt is doing most of the work

Take it off and a button-through A-line hangs from the shoulders as a straight fall of heavy denim: comfortable, and shapeless. Cinch it at the natural waist — the narrowest point, usually an inch above the navel, not down at the hip where jeans sit — and the same dress becomes a defined waist over a full skirt. Belt width is a torso question. A short-waisted figure loses the little vertical space it has under a three-inch belt, so a narrow leather one is the better buy; a long torso can carry the wide one and generally looks better for it. The princess seams running through the body do quieter shaping underneath, which is why this cut holds up even unbelted.

Where the fit usually goes wrong

Two places. The button placket gapes across the bust on anyone past a C cup, and a snap or a few stitches between the two buttons at the fullest point fixes that permanently. And the hem tends to land at mid-calf, the widest part of the leg and the least useful place to stop it on a shorter frame. Either take it up to just below the knee or wear a heel or a platform so the leg keeps going past the hem. If your hips are your fullest point and you would rather not add there, look for a narrower sweep — this silhouette is generous through the skirt by design.

Changing its register by season

The shoe sets the tone. White platform sneakers and a crossbody make it errands and brunch; flat tan sandals and a straw tote make it a vacation dress; knee boots with a fine-knit turtleneck underneath take it into fall, where it works as a pinafore. Mid-blue denim forgives nearly everything except heat — a midi’s worth of it is genuinely warm in August, and the weight that lets the A-line hold its shape is the same weight you feel at noon. Otherwise upkeep is nothing: wash it cold, hang it, let it soften.
