A bixie is a pixie that has been allowed to keep the front of a bob. The nape and sides are cropped close, the crown is cut for texture, and the pieces around the face are left long enough to reach the jaw. That front length is the whole trick — it is what makes the cut feel like an experiment rather than a leap. It is still short hair, though, and worth deciding on those terms.
The bone structure question
A bixie promotes everything underneath it — cheekbones, jawline, neck. That suits oval and heart faces and anyone with small, precise features. Diamond shapes do well too: the longer front pieces fill in a narrow forehead while the crop opens up the widest part of the face.
Round faces are the harder case. Cropped sides plus crown texture pile volume exactly where a round face already carries it. If you want the cut anyway, ask for front pieces that clear the jaw and part it hard to one side rather than down the middle.
Your texture sets the ceiling. Straight to loosely wavy hair is the effortless version. Wiry, heavy hair needs real weight taken out through the crown or it puffs into a mushroom before the first month is out. Tight curls can carry a bixie, but only with extra length left on top to survive the shrinkage.
The real cost is the calendar
Styling takes about ninety seconds — a fingertip of cream, a rough dry, done. The cut is the expensive part. A bixie holds its shape for five or six weeks and then loses it fast: the front pieces outgrow the crown, the silhouette softens, and what read as deliberate starts reading as overdue.
Growing it out is the other thing to know going in: a bixie back to a lob is close to a year and two or three shaping trims. This is not the cut to test short hair with.
How to ask without leaving with a pixie
Plenty of stylists do not use the word bixie and will hear pixie instead. So lead with the front, not the back: the face-framing pieces stay long enough to touch the jaw, and the cropping happens at the nape. Then name how short you are willing to go behind the ears. That is the difference between the two haircuts.
